The National Residence Hall Honorary (NRHH) is a diverse organization that offers a sense of community, along with opportunities for leadership development, recognition, community service, and academic growth.
Sense of Community: NRHH is a tight-knit group of students who are fun, well-rounded, and passionate about making NAU and Flagstaff a welcoming community! This is a great opportunity to meet new people and build connections!
Leadership Development: Our Leadership Development committee, which is led by the Director of Leadership and Academic Development, plans and presents programs during NRHH meetings in order to help our members grow their leadership skills. Some previous programs include Grow Your Confidence, Color Your Life (Time-Management), Public Speaking, and Being a Good Leader and Follower. Being a member of NRHH provides opportunities to network with the Career Development office, improve your resume, and gain a competitive edge for on-campus positions and other jobs.
Recognition: Our Recognition committee, which is led by the Director of Recognition, plans and implements projects to recognize various groups of people at NAU and around the community. Some previous projects include halloween candy bags for the NAU bus drivers, Valentine's Day grams for the Office of Student Life employees, cards and Gatorade for the residence hall custodial staff, cards for Victim Witness Services, and social media shoutouts for Resident Assistants.
Community Service: Our Service committee, which is led by the Director of Service, plans and implements projects to give back to the on-campus and Flagstaff communities. Some previous projects include volunteering at Trunk-R-Treat (our annual Halloween event) and the Homecoming Carnival, making tie blankets for individuals experiencing homelessness, painting Kindness Rocks to distribute around campus, hosting a campus-wide clean up and recycling contest, decorating bookmarks for the Flagstaff Public Library, and writing letters to nurses and children at Flagstaff Medical Center.
One of our year-long service initiatives is the Plarn Project, which aims to create and donate mats for the homeless population in Flagstaff. This is done through the collection of plastic grocery bags, which are then cut and tied into plarn (plastic yarn) to be crocheted into mats. Our members take on an active role in the project, often helping to create plarn during NRHH meetings and donating plastic bags themselves.
Academic Growth: Our Director of Leadership and Academic Development hosts multiple events for members to keep up with their studies! Each semester, we host a study session with tutors who are available to help our members with their schoolwork. We also promote academic growth through encouraging members to attend events put on by NAU, including a late-night study and snack event. Members are also rewarded for attending their professors' office hours, Supplemental Instruction sessions, tutoring, and open hours at the Math Lab.
