Formerly known as Vocational Industrial Clubs of America, SkillsUSA serves more than 360,000 students across the nation in both secondary and post-secondary chapters. Our chapter at NAU was formed in the spring of 2020, meaning that this is our first full year as a student organization on campus. We are formed from members who have been a part of SkillsUSA for many years, and students who have joined for the first time. Our chapter will give plenty of opportunities for students to learn essential skills that employers are in need of. For example, SkillsUSA can teach students communication, leadership, professional development, and responsibility as well as our other 13 skills listed in our framework.
In addition to leadership opportunities on campus, SkillsUSA offers conferences and competitions for students to test their trades at the regional, state, and national level for a gold, silver, or bronze medal. These events include the Fall Leadership Conference where students can learn skills from professionals, the SkillsUSA Arizona State Championships, where students will compete against their peers for the chance to go to the National Leadership and Skills Conference, where they will compete against the top students in the nation in their chosen trade. In addition to these competitions, students may travel to Washington DC for the Washington Leadership Training Institute, an experience where students can learn new leadership skills and advocate for Career and Technical Education with representatives from Congress.
